As the world watches and waits for the opportunity to help a country devastated by a 7.01 magnitude earthquake, many wonder what they can do to help and if they do give, how is the money spent?
As with any business non-profit organizations still have costs associated with giving. Sometimes people think that if you work for a non-profit organization than you shouldn't get paid, that's not true. To run a non-profit organization effectively you have to pay someone to be there full time. It has all the costs associated with a business that is a profit organization. With that said, just to do everything they need to do, costs will be a factor.
Monetary donations help those organizations help people that you simply can't. I am sure if we had the capacity we would give our time and money to help someone in need. But the world doesn't run on LOVE alone it runs on MONEY as well, and nothing is "Free" not even for non-profits. To ship one box (size 25x25x25, at 70lbs) to Haiti costs approximately $500 to $800 (using postal or express mail).
When you give your donations to an organization you are giving them the opportunity to be more efficient in the process. Something as small as $10 can help. If 100 people give $10 that organization is able to use that $1,000 for shipment costs of donations or gas to get them there, as with Katrina. So imagine if 1000 people gave $10. That's not alot per person and has a huge impact.
You can do your part.

Giving $10 and a bag of gently used clothes and non-perishable food can go a long way. Your time is valuable, as well: sorting through clothes, checking expiration dates on food, packaging boxes, even breaking up cardboard, every little bit counts. If you are able to give more than that's FAB*LIS!
No one can do it all alone.
