Nyota Grant was born in Miami, FL. Her father, an artist and activist, was a New York native and descendant of Puerto Rican and American Indian descent. Her mother, an African American, struggled with her place in the world and died when Nyota was 16 of advanced breast cancer, at the age of 39. Throughout her life, Nyota was raised between her mother and grandmother and traveled back and forth between Miami, FL and Honolulu, HI. She grew up dancing to African, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Ballet, Tap, and Jazz genres of music while attending a performing arts school in Miami, FL. She also attended Ransom Everglades in Coconut Grove, FL, and Coral Gables High School in Coral Gables, FL.
When Nyota graduated from Mckinley High School in Honolulu, HI she was scheduled to attend Alabama State but decided to follow her heart and marry her husband of 15 years at the age of 18. While some teenagers were living out their childhoods, Nyota grew up quickly taking care of her mother, her younger brother and then her husband. Struggling to find out who she was, she decided to take a couple of classes at the local community college and settle into her life as a military wife.
A mother of three, Nyota began to understand her place in the universe when she started to attend her college, the University of North Florida. Working part time as a data assessor/grant writer, raising three kids, and studying economics, she graduated in 2006. You can read her article:
